His route
RPG Radar is back, introducing in today’s episode one of Liga ACB’s top players this season, Isaiah Taylor of Murcia. Born on the 11th of July 1994, in Hayward, California, he started playing basketball at a young age and had to learn it instantly the hard way, on the asphalt courts of his hometown, scrapping the skin of his knee all the time. He moved to Houston, prior to his junior high school season, leaving his comfort zone, in order to enroll at Village School and be part of a more highly competitive environment. He was one of Texas most promising players, as ESPN ranked him the 13th prospect in the region. He led the Vikings to a 23 – 5 record during his senior season, with him averaging 17.6 ppg (62.2% FG), 10 apg and 6 spg.
He was a 3-star recruit by that time and received some offers from notable colleges, like Creighton, Alabama and Texas. He decided to join the Longhorns, a high profile team, which had been dominating the previous years in Big 12 Conference. Rick Barnes, the head coach, had confidence in his ability from the beginning, assigning him the role of starting PG from his freshman season, replacing actually Myck Kabongo, who had just graduated!
Despite the departures of the familiar face of Ioannis Papapetrou and Sheldon Mac as well, Texas remained a strong side, with players like Prince Ibeh and Jonathan Holmes (with a short stint in Barcelona back in 2016-17 season) in the front line. Taylor was a revelation, leading Texas in minutes played (30.1 mpg) and assists (4.0 apg), while ranking 2nd in scoring (12.7 ppg) and total steals (37). He was selected to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team and displayed also his leadership and winning spirit, being the team’s top scorer in the NCAA Tournament’s 3rd round loss by Michigan, with 22 points.
The 2014-15 season was somehow controversial for Texas. Despite that the roster was bolstered with a future NBA star, Myles Turner, the team had a poor showing, recording twice during the season a 4 losing streak and finishing with an 8-10 record in the conference. Taylor missed 10 games early in the season due to a fractured left wrist and after his return he would become again one of rotation’s key pieces. He led the team in scoring (13.1 ppg), assists (4.6 apg), steals (23) and reached double figures in scoring 17 times, registering also a team-best 84.2% from the FT line and 1.75 ast/tov ratio.
Despite playing only 15 minutes in a crucial game against Baylor, since Barnes preferred Demarcus Holland, he was clutch in the last few seconds, sealing a huge 61-59 victory. However, Texas lost in the quarter finals of Big-12 Tournament to Iowa State by 67-69 and was eliminated just in the 1st round of NCAA Tournament from Butler.
The next season (2015-16) was the end of an era for the Longhorns, as Barnes was relieved from his position. His replacement was Shaka Smart, a young coach who was known in VCU for his havoc full-court press defense (having Briante Weber as a key defensive player). This system would help Taylor improve further his skillset and fulfill his potential. He was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team by league’s coaches and despite that Texas lost Turner and Holmes, it would still remain competitive, thanks mainly to Taylor.
The Longhorns ended with an 11-7 record in Big-12, but would not see further success, getting eliminated in Big-12 quarter finals by Baylor and losing to underdog Northern Iowa in the 1st round of NCAA Tournament, by 76-79, in a surprise result. Taylor would have his best collegiate career as a sophomore, recording 15 ppg (improving to a career high 31.1% in 3pts), 2.8 rpg, 0.9 spg and an impressive 2.8 ast/tov ratio (5 apg / 1.8 tpg).
His influence was also evident in his advanced stats, posting 9.5 Net Rtg, 35.3 Ast% and 4.3 WS. Taylor had always been very confident in his ability and he decided to forego his last year of eligibility, declaring early in the NBA Draft. Although Taylor was known for his speed and quickness, as well as for his scoring skills from mid-range (mainly with floaters) and his good decision making, he was an inconsistent shooter from long range.
This missing element from his game hurt his NBA chances and was not chosen eventually in the 2016 NBA Draft. He signed a training camp contract with the Rockets, but was waived and moved to Rio Grande Valley Vipers. He had a slow start due to a groin injury, but after his return he was very impressive, adjusting instantly to the team’s fast paced offense and averaging 21 ppg (on 45.7% from behind the 3pt line), 3 rpg and 6 apg, with just 2.4 tpg in a total of 25 games.
After these outstanding performances, the Rockets decided to sign him to a long-term contract and he appeared in 7 games as a rookie. However, the forthcoming off-season, Houston released him and Taylor would have to find again his way to the NBA. Mike Budenholzer’s Atlanta showed faith in him, by offering a 1-year guaranteed contract and Taylor would gradually become the Hawks’ back up PG, after Schroder’s injury, leaving Malcolm Delaney behind him in the team’s rotation. He played in 67 games (9 in the starting line-up), averaging 6.6 ppg (70.2% FT, 42% FG and 25% 3P), 1.4 rpg and 3.1 apg. However, the departure of Budenholzer resulted to Taylor being released at the end of the season…
In the summer of 2018 he signed a contract with the Cavaliers, but a season ending injury would interrupt his rise in the NBA. Taylor had to stay from the courts for 1 year away and during that hard time, he would further improve his mindset, staying strong and motivated. He returned in the 2019-20 G League, once again with Rio Grande Valley Vipers. He played in 16 games, averaging 16.2 ppg (30% in 3pts), 3.9 rpg, 5.4 apg, 1.1 spg and 2.6 tpg. He bounced back emphatically and proved to everyone that he was again a player to watch, with great potential.
Without any serious offers from NBA, he decided to come to Europe in the autumn of 2020 and join Maccabi Rishon. He averaged 17 ppg (on 35.9% behind the 3pt line), 3.1 rpg, 1.2 spg and 4.4 apg with just 1.3 tpg. His great performances resulted to being chosen by Murcia last spring, a team which had developed Askia Booker and Conner Frankamp the previous years. In the last weeks of last season’s Liga Endesa, Taylor would help his team avoid relegation, by averaging 13.7 ppg (34% in 3pts), 1.8 rpg, 0.5 spg, 3.4 apg and 2.2 tpg in 11 games totally.
Murcia renewed his contract last summer and Sito Alonso is fully justified by this decision, as Taylor is one of the most efficient players of ACB. He has been leading his team all the way to a good position in the division table, earning a spot in the Copa del Rey F8, which will be held in the upcoming days. He is averaging 17.3 ppg (League’s 2nd scorer) on a career high of 47.3% in 3pts, 1.7 rpg, 0.6 spg, 2.6 apg and 2.1 tpg (his stats are updated compared to the video, which was edited 2 months ago).
His Profile
It is pretty obvious that Taylor is a … tailor-made combo guard for European standards. His size is acceptable, standing at 1.91 m., but it is his athleticism that makes him special. He is very quick and can accelerate in the open floor, while his vertical jump is also another factor, for being a threat when driving in set offense or in transition. Taylor is a guard who looks to score mainly with lay ups or floaters from mid-range, but has also developed lately a rather efficient 3-pointer, especially in catch ‘n’ shoot situations.
He can be regarded as a 3-level scorer in the making, despite that he is not always consistent from long range and is mostly based on his strength when finishing close to the basket and less to his technique. This does not mean that he is not a good ball handler; on the contrary he moves safely with the ball and is not error prone when dribbling. He has great slashing ability and a nice combination of explosiveness and athleticism, as mentioned before. This season has seen him, witnessing a decrease in his assists per game; however he is a guard who can operate as primary ball handler at higher level, with good decision making and decent passing skills.
Defensively, it is not only his 1-yr experience with Smart’s havoc defense, but also his competitive character, which make him a solid option for every team. He has nice footwork and strong body frame, thus he can guard effectively in the perimeter and at low post as well. Overall, he is a committed on ball defender who will put pressure to the opposition’s ball handler, trying to convert a good D into a steal and easy bucket. His off ball reactions may be average sometimes, however he has the tactical discipline and physical tools, which are required in Euroleague.
Speaking of that, Taylor seems to be a great fit for Euroleague teams, looking for a 2-way guard who can score and pass the ball efficiently, while having at the same time a defensive outlook. He would be more suitable in line ups with a pass first PG who can shoot from long range, or as the leading guard of a team’s 2nd unit. His slashing ability reminds me that of Norris Cole, while his physicality is similar to Brad Wanamaker’s. Overall, my estimation is that he could achieve the status of Lorenzo Brown in the medium-term and he could be described as a glue guy in the back-court.

Σε αυτό το επεισόδιο σας παρουσιάζουμε έναν από τους κορυφαίους παίκτες της φετινής ACB’s, τον Isaiah Taylor της Murcia.

Παρόλα αυτά, η σεζόν έληξε άδοξα με αποκλεισμό μόλις στον 1ο γύρο του NCAA Tournament από το Butler. Ως sophomore, o Taylor «μέτρησε» 13.1 πόντους και 4.6 ασίστ μ.ο. με δείκτη ασίστ / λαθών 1.75.+
Η περίοδος 2015-16 θα σήμαινε μια μεγάλη αλλαγή για τους Longhorns, με την αποχώρηση του Barnes, μετά από 17 συναπτά χρόνια. Στη θέση του ήρθε ο Shaka Smart, γνωστός κυρίως για την περίφημη άμυνα havoc, με ασφυκτική πίεση σε όλο το γήπεδο, την οποία είχε εφαρμόσει με επιτυχία στους VCU Rams, με πρωτοστάτη τον Briante Weber! Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο ο Taylor βελτιώθηκε και έδειξε και τις αμυντικές ικανότητές του. Το Texas τελείωσε τη σεζόν με ρεκόρ 11 – 7 στην Big-12, όμως ξανά δεν γνώρισε ιδιαίτερη επιτυχία, χάνοντας στον 1ο γύρο του NCAA Tournament από το αουτσάιντερ Northern Iowa. Παρόλα αυτά, σε ατομικό επίπεδο, ο Taylor είχε την πιο «πλούσια» χρονιά του, με 15 πόντους μ.ο. (career high 31.1% στα τρίποντα), 2.8 ριμπάουντ, 0.9 κλεψίματα και εντυπωσιακό δείκτη ασίστ / λαθών (2.8 με 5 ασίστ για 1.8 λάθη μ.ο.).

Η Atlanta του Mike Budenholzer τον διάλεξε ως 3η επιλογή για τον άσο, αλλά ο τραυματισμός του Schroder, τον έφερε μπροστά στο rotation. Αγωνίστηκε σε 67 παιχνίδια τη σεζόν 2017-18, με 6.6 πόντους (70.2% στις βολές, 42% στα σουτ εντός παιδιάς και 25% στα τρίποντα), 1.4 ριμπάουντ και 3.1 ασίστ μ.ο. Παρόλα αυτά, η αποχώρηση του Budenholzer στο τέλος της περιόδου, οδήγησε και στη δική του απομάκρυνση.
Το καλοκαίρι του 2018 υπέγραψε συμβόλαιο με τους Cavaliers, αλλά ένας σοβαρός τραυματισμός τον κράτησε μακριά από τα γήπεδα για ένα χρόνο.Επέστρεψε πιο δυνατός τη σεζόν 2019-20, ξανά με τους Rio Grande Valley Vipers, στην G League, με τους οποίους είχε 16.2 πόντους (30% στα τρίποντα), 3.9 ριμπάουντ, 5.4 ασίστ, 1.1 κλεψίματα και 2.6 λάθη μ.ο.
Το φθινόπωρο του 2020, χωρίς εγγυημένες προσφορές από ομάδες του ΝΒΑ, ήρθε στην Ευρώπη για λογαριασμό της Maccabi Rishon, με την οποία είχε 17 πόντους, 3.1 ριμπάουντ και 4.4 ασίστ ανά παιχνίδι, για να μετακομίσει στη συνέχεια στη Murcia, βοηθώντας τη να αποφύγει τον υποβιβασμό και συνεχίζοντας την παράδοση καλών γκαρντ τα τελευταία χρόνια, μετά τους Askia Booker και Conner Frankamp.
Η Murcia ανανέωσε το συμβόλαιό του και δικαιώθηκε πλήρως, καθώς ο Taylor είναι από τους πιο αποτελεσματικούς παίκτες της ACB φέτος. Έως τώρα έχει οδηγήσει την ομάδα του σε ένα καλό πλασάρισμα στη βαθμολογία και στην πρόκριση στο F8 του Copa del Rey. Σε 18 παιχνίδια έχει 17.3 πόντους (2ος σκόρερ) με career high 47.3% στα τρίποντα, 1.7 ριμπάουντ, 0.6 κλεψίματα και 2.6 ασίστ για 2.1 λάθη μ.ο. (τα updated στατιστικά διαφέρουν με αυτά του βίντεο, το οποίο επιμελήθηκα πριν 2 μήνες).
To προφίλ
Από τα παραπάνω είναι προφανές, ότι ο Taylor είναι ένας combo guard «κομμένος και ραμμένος» για τα Ευρωπαϊκά δεδομένα. Το μέγεθος του είναι αποδεκτό (1.91 μ.), αλλά είναι κυρίως η αθλητικότητα το στοιχείο που τον κάνει ξεχωριστό. Πρόκειται για γρήγορο και εκρηκτικό γκαρντ, που επιταχύνει στο ανοιχτό γήπεδο, ενώ και το υψηλό άλμα του τον βοηθάει να σκοράρει με drive σε set παιχνίδι ή στον αιφνιδιασμό. Γενικά, ο Taylor είναι ένας περιφερειακός που σκοράρει κυρίως με lay up (και με τα δύο χέρια) και με floater από μέση απόσταση. Τελευταία έχει βελτιώσει την αποτελεσματικότητά του στο τρίποντο, ειδικά σε καταστάσεις catch ‘n’ shoot.
Μπορεί να θεωρηθεί ως 3-level scorer … σε εξέλιξη, παρόλο που ακόμη δεν είναι σταθερός από μακρινή απόσταση και στηρίζεται περισσότερο στη δύναμη του όταν τελειώνει φάσεις από ντράιβ, παρά στην τεχνική του. Αυτό πάντως δεν σημαίνει ότι δεν είναι καλός στο χειρισμό, αντίθετα κινείται με άνεση με την μπάλα και γενικά δεν είναι επιρεπής στο λάθος όταν τριπλάρει. Η πτώση του σε ασίστ τη φετινή σεζόν είναι ορατή, ωστόσο παραμένει ένας γκαρντ που μπορεί να οργανώσει καλά την επίθεση μιας ομάδας και να λειτουργήσει ως βασικός χειριστής στο υψηλότερο επίπεδο, με καλές αποφάσεις και πάσα.
Στην άμυνα, δεν είναι μόνο η συνύπαρξη του με τον Smart για έναν χρόνο και η αφομοίωση της άμυνας havoc, αλλά κυρίως η ανταγωνιστικότητα και μαχητικότητα που επιδεικνύει για να μπορεί να θεωρηθεί ως καλός αμυντικός. Διαθέτει καλό footwork και δυνατό κορμό, που του επιτρέπουν να μαρκάρει αποτελεσματικά στην περίμετρο και κοντά στο καλάθι. Συνολικά, βγάζει ένταση στα μετόπισθεν και πιέζει πάνω στην μπαλα, προσπαθώντας να την κλέψει και να οδηγήσει την ομάδα του σε αιφνιδιασμό. Οι αντιδράσεις του μακριά από αυτή, κάποιες φορές είναι μέτριες, αφήνοντας χώρο στην περιφέρεια, ή αργώντας να βγει για βοήθεια ή να επιστρέψει στον αντίπαλό του, ωστόσο η τακτική πειθαρχεία και τα φυσικά του προσόντα είναι ένας καλός συνδυασμός για να σταδιοδρομήσει στην Euroleague.
Συνεπώς, ο Taylor μοιάζει με καλό fit για ομάδες της Euroleague, που ψάχνουν για 2-way guard, που θα μπορεί να σκοράρει και να πασάρει, έχοντας παράλληλα αμυντικό προσανατολισμό. Θα ταίριαζε σε 5αδες δίπλα σε ατόφιο pass first PG, ή ως leading guard της 2nd unit. Η ικανότητα του στη διείσδυση θυμίζει Norris Cole, ενώ η σκληράδα του τον Wanamaker. Η εκτίμηση μου είναι ότι μελλοντικά και εφόσον βρεθεί στο κατάλληλο περιβάλλον, θα μπορούσε να φθάσει στο στάτους του Lorenzo Brown και να χαρακτηριστεί ως glue guy σε ομάδα της Euroleague.
